Now I found an exhibition showing items from Gefle Porslinsfabrik (ornamentation by Eugen Trost, among others) and some nice textile prints by Sven Wranér, former town architect. (Pic 2)

All of a sudden, I miss this desperately. The place where I used to do my yoga almost every morning during the whole summer. Now in December the days are just plain gray, or really, really dark black. Still need my exercise. Yoga indoors, running outdoors, in the gray. Have to. Otherwise I´m afraid my soul would adopt that very same sad shade...

My last day (a sunny day!) in Visby. Having the opportunity to go away like this is such a treat. It´s like a nice present to the creative part of your self, who will (hopefully) not whine and grumble for a considerable time to come. The centre, Baltic Centre for Writers and Translators, who has made this week possible, is almost to good to be true:)

PS. Glad to see that the swan (from my post nov 29) finally made it! How it managed to escape from that overdecorated window full of garter belts and silk corsets. A real achievement! And a happy end on this trip!

Found these small drawings a couple of days ago. Looks as some kind of story, named Gåvan (The Gift). But who are those people? Why are their noses looking like boots? Why the dog? Gesällbageriet, Figeholm. Early weekend mornings you´ll find freshly baked pastries and home made sourdough bread here. In the middle of nowhere, far from bigger cities, hidden in a small back street. Chickens in the garden, a column of bread scented smoke from the chimney and fire in the fireplace. A perfect stop on a Saturday morning.

En hök kom och dödade två av våra tuppar. Det är sånt som händer, men det är ändå sorgligt. Två stora fjäderhögar, och i närheten av dessa låg tupparna. Rico under en hallonbuske och Choko under båtvagnen. Det var mörkt ute, och marken var hård, men vi begravde dem invid staketet till kohagen. Sen skrev jag en dikt. Den gick så här:

Två tuppar
Under jord och mull
En hök slog ner
Och slog omkull
Nyss var det liv
Nu är det död
Och vit, kall mark
Blir varm och röd
Nu skäller rådjuret
I skogens bryn
Nu kväker grodan
I den frusna dyn
Nu lyser månen
Över jord och mull
För alla döda
tuppars skull

Two of our roosters (Choko and Rico) sadly died a few days ago, after a hawk had attacked. We solemnly buried them in the garden and I wrote a small poem to the deceased (words in Swedish, above.)

Looking forward to this book by Annalena Hedman, the third about Abbe. The story takes place in the northen village Istermyrträsk, and contains a lot of humor and warmth. As always a joy to read aloud (not all books are). Recept för en flygtur will be out in January. Cover is made by me. (The earlier books written by Annalena: 1 and 2.)

When school started after a long summer break earlier this year the children were asked to draw something from their holiday. My youngest son drew this. Maybe some teachers wondered, but the explanation is not as traumatic as it might seem. We had seen the musical Little Shop of Horrors, performed by students in Västervik, and that had made a strong impression (on all of us.) After that day the children are constantly looking out for a carnivorous plant to bring home, feed and nurse.

Some of my spreads from a new book published by Bonnier Carlsen. Lilla barnkammarboken: Julsånger. On the radio this morning they said that in seven weeks we will be sweeping snow here in these parts of Sweden. Maybe time to start freshening up some Christmas songs? Other contributors in this anthology are Stina Wirsén, Jan Lööf, Anna Höglund och Maj Fagerberg, m fl.

Mina bidrag är illustrationer till sångerna Feliz Navidad, Vi äro musikanter och Ritsch, ratsch, filibom. Jag hade väldigt roligt när jag ritade! (Särskilt bilden till Vi äro... Jag har alltid tyckt att det är någonting riktigt mysko med vuxna som går i ring och spelar loss på osynliga musikinstrument.)

A gray weather day, so far. Last week, on Friday, I finally sent away a picture book I have been working on for some time. (The book will be published by Rabén & Sjögren in early spring next year.) So now I have to do some cleaning up before starting working on new things. These (gray) images were found on my computer. The sowing that has made me most happy this season is the sowing of the aster (the three last photos). Love the colors, and they bloom for such a long time, outdoors and in their vase. (And they bloom now, when almost nothing else does!) These particular ones are called Princess (Callistephus chinensis).

This gardening thing keeps escalating for every year. For an impatient person like me the garden is a reminder of that some things (many things!) need time. You can´t rush plants to grow. From the top: tree onion, artichoke, the newest growing beds invaded by pumpkin plants, nemesia, salvia, globe thistle. I always decide in advance what I want the gardening season to be like, and it always turns out absolutely differently. Differently, but in a good way.

Back from the book fair in Gothenburg, where I had the honor to receive the Elsa Beskow plaquette. That was great, but even greater was the opportunity to meet so many nice persons! Too bad that many meetings were a bit short, though. And book fair atmosphere does not bring out the best in me, but a shifting gaze and a shrill voice...

Images above are 4 new portraits for BRIS, Children's Rights in Society. These will be used as vignettes in the BRIS magazine and in the BRIS annual reports, when quoting from authentic phone calls and when reporting about harsh reality cases.

Det är egentligen fantastiskt. Att det bara tar 24 timmar för en höna att producera ett nytt ägg! Först fångas äggcellen upp i hönans äggledartratt (20 minuter). Sen bildas äggvita runt gulan, som ju är den egentliga äggcellen (tre timmar) och därpå bildas skalet (under ca 20 timmar). En halvtimme efter det att hönan värpt börjar ett nytt ägg att bildas. Ostronskal behöver hönan äta för att äggskalet inte ska bli ömtåligt. Ungefär 200 ägg om året värper en höna i genomsnitt. Fast hos oss slutade Sylvia att värpa i slutet av sommaren. (Varför vet vi inte.) Och Elvis börjar inte lägga ägg förrän till våren, då vårljuset sätter fart på alla hönors värplust.

It´s really amazing, that a hen produce an egg in 24 hours. And that an average hen warp about 200 eggs in a year.

Två ögonblicksbilder. ÖPP, ÖPP, ÖPP... säger Dunet, när han försöker baxa sig in hos oss för att kolla om det finns nåt framdukat i köket. Ena foten har han, likt en erfaren dammsugarförsäljare, som vanligt satt i dörrspringan. Och medan jag försöker stänga ytterdörren, har Elvis promenerat in genom altandörren och vidare in i sovrummet, där hon gjort sig ett mysigt rede bland täcken och kuddar.

En helt vanlig morgon hos oss. Fyra tuppar som ger hals. Precis utanför ytterdörren. Klockan sex. Vad galandet betyder är: "Mer mat! (Och helst lite godare.) NU!" Dunet, som är störst, står längst fram och försöker se hotfull ut. Han har precis passerat målbrottet, och begåvats med en kraftfull (än så länge inte helt pålitlig) basröst. Som låter precis som hundskall. Faktiskt mycket likt de läten som kommer från djupet ur en Dobermann.

An ordinary morning outside our door. Four roosters shouting; "Give us more food! Now!" Dunet, the biggest one, stands in front of the crowd, barking like a Doberman.

Våra höns. Av de fyra nyss nyfödda kycklingarna visade sig endast en vara höna. Så nu bor totalt fyra tuppar och två hönor i hönshuset. Inte så bra, om man vill ha en harmonisk flock, men än så länge råder dock fred och harmoni i hönsgården. De före detta kycklingarna (Elvis, Choko, Rico och Dunet) är nu tonåringar, som driver omkring i en egen liten flock i trädgården. De sprätter i landen, skränar, äter upp kålplantorna och drar upp alla de tulpanlökar som egentligen borde få vila sig i jorden till i vår. Hönsgårdens överhuvud (nuförtiden enbart kallad Tuppen) och den nästan helt blinda hönan Sylvia lever ett mer stillsamt pensionärsliv i närheten av hönshuset. De går och lägger sig prick klockan 18, medan ungdomarna tar sig ut på djärva utflykter i kohagen, allt medan mörkret sänker sig över Prästängen.

Only one of the four chickens (Elvis, Choko, Rico och Dunet) turned out to be a hen (Elvis). There are still no real fights among the youngsters, but soon there might be... A grown-up rooster needs to have a flock of hens of his own. But still the teenagers get along pretty well, spending their days drifting about in the garden plots, making a lot of noise. The rooster (Tuppen) and the almost blind hen Sylvia live a more peaceful life, going to bed early at night, while the rest stay out until sun goes down behind the tree tops.

Suddenly the height of the summer is gone, the air is a bit cooler and soon there will be school and work and early mornings. We spend the last days of summer holiday at home, surrounded by Dunet (pic 2 and 3) and the other chickens.

There is a nice museum in Eksjö, now showing Albert Engström and handicraft from Småland. The hood in the last picture is so very beautiful! I don´t think there´s anything more inspiring to me than this kind of folk handicraft.

Another trip through the small and very Swedish villages. Å picked me up at Mjölby railway station, and we went to Omberg Turisthotell. A lot of hard work has to be done, when exploring all the places in this book.

This is one of the things about summer I like the best! When you can pick and dig up and collect things from nature or the garden. Chard is a favorite! (First pic.) Just to boil in water (with a little salt) for some minutes, then eat with butter, or some lemon, olive oil and sea salt flakes. Almost as good as asparagus!

(Nytt för i år, för de besökande barnen, var en inte-nudda-mark-bana, byggd av en av byns konstnärer i grönskan på Basarkullen. Den blev snabbt välbesökt. Och kommer att finnas kvar även efter helgen! Bild 2, alltså.)

Pictures from Mörtforsdagen 2011. The yearly event gathered more visitors than ever before! Beautiful weather, many nice things to do, see and eat. The duck race, a huge cake buffet made by the guesthouse, old mopeds, live-turnery, Cornelis in very small swimming-trunks, and a lot of other findings.
The last photo shows the work space for me and Jakob the days before Mörtforsdagen, the Community Centre, where we spend some hours hand lettering all the signs.

Mingling with flowers, cutting of dead branches and trying to discourage the chickens from scratching in the garden plots. Work days (without working gloves and secateurs) seem to be very far away, but now and then I really long for pencils and paper. Wish I was handy as Ingela. Her pink elephant is so very cute!

And Legoland. I have once, no twice, stayed at the real Göta Hotell, but the lego hotel is also looking good. After a day in Legoland, you fall asleep in no time.

The notice board in Mörtfors is really crammed this time of year, and soon it´s time för Mörtforsdagen igen. (Årets affisch här.) The curtain embroidery in the doorway to the dressing cabin at the bathing place is made by my mother-in-law.

This book gives me hope! The Iron Man, written by Ted Hughes, illustrated by Laura Carlin. Fold out spreads, blank cuttings, brave illustrations. A daring publishing house. And the result: A book that you really notice. Can´t wait to read it!

Monday at work. Found a paper bag from Marabouparken, with a nice logo. Postcard with a motif by Hilding Linnqvist, an artist i really like. The small animal drawn on a piece of paper (in the last picture) is made by one of my sons.

And the chickens are growing, the cows have been on the run again, this time the whole bunch of them. Met some of them on the road, on my way home to see the devastated kitchen garden (not photographed). Time to start sowing. Again...

Wirum glass (Wirum Ice cream) has made frozen gel packs with my milk can prints as a motif. Here´s the graphic profile I made for Wirum glass last year: 1, 2 and 3. The frozen packs can be bought in the farm shop at Wirum.
